Caught between tradition and modernity Tokyo goes through a metamorphosis in the 1970s, influenced by an economic boom and a new view of and focus on the west. At the same time a completely new, modern approach to industrial design emerges – perfectly embodied in our Tokyo Soda Siphon.

In the 1970s Japan finds itself on a crossroads as the country relentlessly pushes for the industrialisation of its economy and everything begins to mix: Technology and traditional craftmanship, western culture and national heritage, modernity and tradition. Tokyo’s population soon surpasses 11m and Asia’s tallest skyscraper is built. As the west slows down Japan launches its first satellite into space, exports cars to the entire world and sends its first couturiers to the Paris fashion shows.

The west begins to rediscover Japanese culture piece by piece: the first episodes of Japanese manga cartoons are broadcast on TV and Japanese popular culture begins to gain traction.

Founded in 1917, the Nippon Tansan Gas Company of Tokyo develops a modern Soda Siphon - the first to bear the label “Made in Japan”. The Tokyo Soda Siphon was introduced in 1975 inspired by both traditional and modern design cues.

The Tokyo Soda Siphon has been part of an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York and was awarded with the “Design of the Year” by the Wall Street Journal in 2010.
